[Development Story] Tool watch developed in collaboration with the German Maritime Search and Rescue Service (DGzRS)
For over 150 years, the German Maritime Search and Rescue Association (DGzRS) has been ensuring safety in the North Sea and the Baltic Sea. Rescue personnel at sea risk their lives in an important and dangerous job.
Rescue crews at sea usually operate in rough seas, and although their rescue cruisers and boats are always highly seaworthy, many civilian watches used in such situations have been damaged during rescue missions.
This was a turning point for Mühle-Glashütte.
Mühle-Glashütte, which has a reputation in Germany for its traditional measuring instrument manufacturing techniques passed down through the 150s and for its watches that are highly precise, robust, and easy to read, has decided to work with the German Maritime Search and Rescue Association (DGzRS) to produce a watch that can withstand rough seas and can be used during rescue missions.
The development was carried out with Dr. Bernd Anders, then Managing Director of DGzRS.
With maximum consideration given to practicality, "we want to limit the dial and functions to the bare minimum."
That was the key to the SAR design.
How does it feel to wear? Is the watch easy to read? Does it have too many functions? Is the material durable enough to withstand rough seas?
After about a year of development starting in March 2001 and receiving numerous pieces of feedback from the German Maritime Search and Rescue Association (DGzRS), the current SAR model was finally born in 2022.

The most important thing in the development process was a practical design.
1) Maximum readability
The SAR model features the highest readability. The date area is magnified like a magnifying glass by inserting a glass from the inside.
Another point of emphasis is that, while the other ▲ symbols face towards the center of the watch, the ▲ symbol at 12 o'clock is designed to face upwards as a directional indicator, in case situations such as rough waves on a boat make it difficult to sense direction.
2) 4mm thick sapphire glass
The SAR watch is made even more robust by using 4mm thick SAR anti-reflective sapphire crystal, compared to the usual 1.2mm thickness . This 4mm crystal is approximately three times stronger than standard sapphire crystal.
3) Luminova coating makes it easy to read even in the dark
Luminova is used on the dial and indexes to make the watch easy to read even in dark conditions.
The cream dial model has Luminova on the dial, while the black dial model has Luminova on the indexes.
4) Excellent wearing comfort
Naturally, when it comes to watches, especially tool watches, "comfort" is important.
The crown of the SAR watch is located at the 4 o'clock position so that it does not feel uncomfortable on the wrist when worn .
The case is rounded to prevent injury to the face or body of the rescuer during a rescue. It is designed to fit snugly around the wrist with as few protrusions as possible, making it safe to use in everyday life .
5) Excellent pressure resistance
The high-quality case is pressure-resistant up to 100 bar , so even exposure to salt water or sudden temperature changes will not adversely affect the SAR.
